Just some General Travel Tips

Join a Travel Club I am a mother of four and have found that since joining my vacation membership club taking vacations with the whole family is much more enjoyable. Through experience (of my own and others) I have discovered a few things about vacationing.
1. The number one stress about a vacation is costs! Let’s face it budgets are getting stretched tighter and tighter these days, one thing that I refuse to sacrifice is a good vacation. I’ve always found that when I start to look for something in my life it shows up. As our budget needed to be stretched tighter I looked for ways to vacation with my family affordably. Of course there’s always camping and road trips and yes those are memorable times, but WAY too much work for Mom. My recommendation would be a cruise or all-inclusive style resort vacation. Most people won’t even look into these options as the general public believes them to be expensive and not really family friendly options. I was the same, cruises were a vacation that was only affordable for Mom & Dad. That was all up until I found this vacation club membership. Yeah I am a member of Costco and Sam’s Club and they have their travel deals, but it was nothing like this other membership. After attending a meeting about it I was really excited, but I kind of thought it might be too good to be true. I figured that the membership fee was worth the risk, so we bought in and booked a family cruise right away. I told friends about how I had found this deal and all of them were way skeptical, but come May my family and I went to Carnival Cruise Lines embarkation line and not only did everything go smoothly, but once we got to a certain point there was a reserved line for the people that had this membership! I took my family of 6 people on a cruise to the Bahamas for $1581.88; that was my TOTAL including taxes, fees, and port charges! And no it was NOT too good to be true! We actually upgraded to two Ocean view rooms and we were in a prime location on the ship…in fact I got my choice between levels and location of my room! I was THRILLED to say the least, my kids talk about that vacation all the time, and we’ve had some amazing vacations in the past that I paid a lot more for. So to save money on family vacations my number one recommendation is to join this membership club. The membership costs generally pays for itself in taking one vacation per year, but they also have a referral reward program where you can get your monthly membership fees waived. You can find more about that by requesting a video be emailed to you here. Sorry I didn't mean for that "tip" to turn into a sales pitch, it's just so exciting!
Some other money saving travel tips.
  • Book online: most hotels, car rental companies, attractions, etc. have a “web discount” or web booking price. There is a difference in travel booking engines. Places like Expedia, Orbitz, or Travelocity generally prepurchase "blocks" of rooms, cars, flights, etc. so the prices on these items can vary greatly between sites. Places such as with Rovia are actual travel agent sites so they have streaming access to the travel Global distribution systems to offer you the realtime price of travel as you request it. You can save time and money by booking travel online. If you're worried about safety simply ensure you either print out confirmations or keep confirmation numbers handy; such as texting them to yourself.
  • Look through the results: When booking on a travel site, sometimes the results are sorted by who is paying the highest commission not by price relevance, really search through the results or if you’re searching on my site ensure there is a little up arrow next to the “price” field, do this by clicking on “price” in the description columns.
  • Book as a GROUP: this is big and it doesn’t happen very often because people don’t want the headache of putting the group together, but if you think you can get a group together of 20+ people to travel you can get the “group rates” which can be a great savings. If you don’t want to deal with heading up a group you’ll find that someone else may be willing to coordinate the details for you. Of course you would probably still be handling some PR and getting enough people to go with. A note on this is that some people want to travel as a couple or a family, just because you’re in a “group” doesn’t mean you have to do all of your activities with the group…
  • Pick Travel days wisely:Airfare tends to be more affordable when you can travel at “non peak” times. Business travelers generally travel Fridays through Monday mornings, so if you’re going somewhere try to book your flights on Tues, Wed, or Thursday and see if that helps your budget at all; remember to weight the flight cost difference with one more night at the hotel and/or an additional day on the car rental if you’re not booking a package.
  • 2. The #2 stress about a vacation is When, Where, What? A lot of people know they want to visit certain places, but don’t know much about the places. Some options would be to:
Google it: when you google the subject you’ll want to make sure you go to the “organic” listings as they are not paying google to advertise their information. When searching for opinions organic listings are the best. An example would be “Things to do in Ecuador” or if you don’t know for sure where to go maybe “top ten vacation locations”. Of course I recommend google because it is an organic search, not paid advertisers. You could utilize any search engine really.
Blogs are good sources of information if you know one to look for
Of course utilize your social media network of friends: Post in your status that you’re looking for things to do in Ecuador and see if anyone in your network has been there or knows someone who has. People LOVE to talk about their vacations so get them talking! Of course you’ll risk receiving some sales pitches with this, just remember that they really are trying to help you out.
Weather.com is a good place to find weather trends where you want to go at the certain time of year. After typing in the city you want to visit click on the month tab near the top of the page and it will tell you what the average temps are in that area for that day. This will also help in your decision on whether or not to purchase travel insurance on your vacation. If you choose to cruise during hurricane season you’ll definitely want to consider vacation insurance.

    3. What to pack? It’s a toss up between what to pack and what about the pets as the #3 concern for the majority of people. I am an animal lover however since I now travel so frequently I don’t have a pet; thus what to pack officially comes in as #3 for me (don’t worry pet owners we’ll talk about what to do with the pets)
Once you’ve decided where your going and what you’re doing what to pack usually falls into place pretty naturally, however in some situations we’re actually experiencing a 1st so there may be questions surrounding the circumstances. For instance if you’ve never been on a cruise to the Southern Caribbean islands in January you may wonder about what to pack or if you’ve never even cruised before at all you wouldn’t know that there are dress codes in certain areas of the ship.
    • Specific Cruise line websites:If you’ve never cruised before each cruise line has a website that offers valuable information on appropriate cruise attire.
    • New Time of Year: If you’re experiencing a familiar location at a new time of year, 1st check the weather and make adjustments to your wardrobe appropriately.
    • Almost always appropriate to pack: Of course there are some appropriate things to pack on every trip and while they may be obvious to some here they are anyway:
~A light jacket: even when going somewhere warm a light jacket is appropriate for overly air conditioned rooms, evening breezes, unexpected cooler weather, etc.
~Camera and charger or extra batteries: when cruising especially extra batteries could cost you a lot extra so save the dough and pack some extra batteries. And of course there’s always a moment for a camera on a vacation!
~Bathing suit: I know some people don’t like to swim, but you never know when you’ll change your mind, I pack my swimming suit even when going on business trips (granted my business trips are more like vacations than work), but you never know when you’ll want to soak in the hot tub or swim a lap or two.
~Toothbrush: although this is a simple fix if you forget yours it really makes a difference to your mouth when you have the toothbrush you’re used to.
~Smile: Planning a vacation can be an involved process so when you remember to smile before and during it will be much easier to smile after and make the memories all the better.

    4. NOW, what to do with the pets: Vacation is a necessity in my opinion so when you have your beloved animals to either take with you or find a sitter for it adds a little pressure to the situation of vacation planning. There are a few options here:
Take them with you: this is an option where most people don’t think it is. There are many resorts that allow pets. There is fine print here so make sure you are clear on the rules and regulations regarding pets at whichever resort you choose. Note: In my experience most cruise lines only allow guide dogs so you’ll have to go with one of these other options if you’re cruising.
Ask a neighbor: Vacationing much less frequently because you feel like your pet is with your neighbor more than with you is not an option. Pet sitting can be a treat for people who don’t have pets of their own and just need to get their “fix” in every now and again. I love animals, but can’t have pets for various reasons so when I get the opportunity to pet sit, I am usually up for the challenge.
Professional pet sitters: even if you have a friend that you use for pet sitting you may want to consider a professional pet sitting company. Make sure you tour the facilities and ask for references. You’ll enjoy your vacation more knowing that your furry friends are being well cared for.
